Kate Middleton Was Given This Blunt Warning About Fame by a Surprising Royal.
The caution reportedly stemmed from concerns about Princess Diana.
After witnessing what Princess Diana went through in the spotlight, Prince Philip wanted to make sure Kate Middleton approached royal life differently when she joined the family.
Philip, who was married to Queen Elizabeth until his death at age 99 in 2021, was fond of Kate, calling her a “level-headed girl,” according to royal biographer Gyles Brandreth, per The Daily Mail. The late prince reportedly didn’t want Kate’s grounded nature to change after her 2011 wedding to Prince William, given his concerns about Diana.
“One of the things that saddened and worried the Queen and Prince Philip about Diana, Princess of Wales, was not that she was popular, but that she allowed her popularity to go to her head,” Brandreth wrote in his book Philip: the Final Portrait, which was published shortly after Philip’s passing. “Once upon a time, Philip and Elizabeth were seen as characters from a fairytale. The difference between them and Princess Diana, I think, is that they did not take it personally.”
With that in mind, Philip said, according to Brandreth, “If you believe the attention is for you, for you personally, you’re going to end up in trouble. The attention is for your role, what you do, what you’re supporting. It isn’t for you as an individual. You are not a celebrity. You are representing the royal family. That’s all.”
Philip also had specific guidance for how Kate should conduct herself during public engagements, according to Brandreth. “Don’t look at the camera. The Queen never looks at the camera,” Philip said, per Brandreth. “Never. Look at who you are talking to. Look at who you’ve come to see. Diana looked at the camera.” (Queen Elizabeth died in 2022, one year after Philip, at age 96.)
Brandreth said that Kate still takes the late Duke of Edinburgh’s advice to heart. “She never looks at the camera,” the biographer said of the future queen.
Brandreth’s words appear to ring true, as Kate is often engaged and present when representing the royal family.
During her September 30 visit with West Sussex Minibus, a volunteer transport organization in England that works to combat social isolation, Kate was photographed locking eyes and giggling with members of the local community.
As part of the outing, she helped elderly passengers board the van, including Pulborough resident Stella Drewett, 94. Kate surprised Drewett by knocking on her door, and the two were all smiles as the royal guided her to the transport.
And, as it turns out, because Kate is so locked into these moments, she often leaves things behind.
While chatting with Drewett, Kate revealed, per Hello!, she forgets her purse during royal engagements. “Everyone always runs after me [shouting], ‘You forgot handbag.’”
The "surprising royal" was Prince Philip, Duke of Edinburgh, who gave Catherine a direct reality check about the distinction between royal duty and personal fame early in her royal life.
According to royal biographer Gyles Brandreth in Philip: The Final Portrait, Prince Philip sat down with Kate and delivered a blunt warning about the perils of believing your own press:
"If you believe the attention is for you personally, you're going to end up in trouble. The attention is for your role, what you do, what you're supporting. It isn't for you as an individual. You are not a celebrity. You are representing the Royal Family. That’s all."
The Two Practical Rules Philip Passed Down
Alongside his stark warning, Philip gave Kate two concrete rules of conduct modeled on Queen Elizabeth II’s lifelong approach to public life:
1. "Never Look at the Camera": Philip instructed Kate never to lock eyes with the press pack during walkabouts. While celebrities pose and perform for lenses, Philip emphasized that Queen Elizabeth always directed her attention entirely to the citizen or host right in front of her. Royal observers note that engaging with the person instead of the camera ensures an outing remains a meaningful public service rather than a media performance.
2. Talk About the Cause, Never Yourself: Philip advised that during speeches, interviews, and walkabouts, the conversation should focus strictly on the organization, the patronages, or the community members being visited.
Why the Warning Shaped Her Long-Term Success.
Biographers frequently credit Prince Philip’s advice with keeping Kate grounded during her transition into senior royal duties. Having seen past royal figures—most notably Princess Diana—suffer emotional turmoil when the lines between royal service and celebrity adulation blurred, Philip sought to protect Kate from the same trap.
By fully embracing the "you are not a celebrity" mantra, Kate established the steady, low-drama discipline that has defined her public persona ever since.
