Kate Middleton and Prince William's Relationship Timeline: 2001

The pair first met in college at St. Andrew's University in 2001, and though they became fast friends, both Prince William and Kate Middleton have recalled their first few encounters as awkward.

"I think you said I actually went bright red when I met you and sort of scuttled off," she recalled to William during their 2010 engagement interview. "[I was] feeling very shy about meeting you."

After they were friends for around a year, Prince William explained that they had quite a bit in common, and a romantic relationship blossomed.

After four years together, the couple split briefly in 2007, People confirmed in April of that year. At the time, Middleton was establishing herself in her career, all while grappling with the national attention on her relationship. Prince William was also stationed outside of London as an armored corps commander trainee, which added a distance factor, as well.

"We did split up for a bit, but that was just, we were both very young, it was at university, and we were both sort of defining ourselves as such and being different characters and stuff," Prince William explained in an ITV interview years later. "It was very much trying to find our own way and we were growing up."

While staying in a cabin on the side of Mount Kenya, Prince William proposed to Middleton. To no surprise, he popped the question while presenting his mother's ring.

"It was about three weeks ago, on holiday in Kenya," Prince William recalled in the same 2010 ITV engagement interview. "We had a little private time away together with some friends, and I just decided that it was the right time, really. We'd been talking about marriage for a while, so it wasn't a massively big surprise, but I took her up somewhere nice in Kenya, and I proposed."

After the years the couple had spent together, people across the world were eager for a royal wedding at last.

“Everyone is absolutely delighted. He has never had eyes for any other woman since Kate came on the scene,” an old friend told People shortly after the engagement news went public. “She is going to make a wonderful wife, a wonderful princess.”
