The Princess of Wales(Kate Middleton) Wanted a Completely Different Name for Prince George.

Welp, turns out Prince George nearly wasn't named Prince George. Kate Middleton and Prince William's eldest kid's full title is, ahem, George Alexander Louis. But curiously Kate desired to go with some thing definitely different.

According to royal editor Russell Myers in William and Catherine, The Monarchy's New Era: The Inside Story (per People), Will and Kate "spent hours" studying names, and Kate firstly desired Alexander or Alexandra.

"Catherine had her coronary heart set on Alexander for a boy or Alexandra (also Queen Elizabeth's center name) for a girl. William had privately voiced his choice for having a girl, and used to be eager to include a tribute to his late mother, most probable in the shape of a center name," Myers explains. "The couple had been given a e book of toddler names by way of a shut friend, which they spent hours thumbing via — they regularly ended up in matches of laughter after one or the different had introduced a greater left-field suggestion."

When George used to be born, People stated that his first title was once a tribute to Queen Elizabeth's father, George VI. Meanwhile, Alexander honored the Queen herself (her center title used to be Alexandra). As for Louis, it used to be regarded a tribute to the Queen's husband Prince Philip (whose grandfather used to be named Prince Louis) and Earl Louis Mountbatten.

At the time of Prince George's birth, royal biographer Christopher Warwick instructed Royal Family Story "With George we have a traditional, basic identify with historic connotations. It may no longer be too imaginative, however it isn't always too surprising. In a royal context it is a very terrific and big identify due to the fact it capacity that perhaps one day in the dim and far away future this infant would end up George VII."

Yes, according to a new royal biography, Kate Middleton (now the Princess of Wales) initially had her heart set on a completely different name for her firstborn son, Prince George.

The revelation comes from royal editor Russell Myers’ upcoming book William and Catherine, The Monarchy’s New Era: The Inside Story(set for release in March 2026). Excerpts shared in outlets like The Mirror and People detail how the couple spent hours researching names before Prince George’s birth in July 2013, since they chose not to learn the baby’s sex in advance.

Kate reportedly favored Alexander for a boy (or Alexandra if it turned out to be a girl—also a nod to Queen Elizabeth II’s middle name). Meanwhile, Prince William leaned toward more traditional royal options and had privately hoped for a girl so he could include a tribute to his late mother, Princess Diana (likely as a middle name).

William ultimately narrowed the boy’s names to George (a tribute to King George VI, Queen Elizabeth II’s father) and Louis. They settled on George Alexander Louis a compromise that placed Kate’s preferred Alexander as the second name, while honoring royal tradition with George as the first.

This bit of behind-the-scenes insight highlights how even the future king’s name involved some back-and-forth between the parents! Prince George, now 12, has grown into his name perfectly, of course.
