The Prince and Princess of Wales Make a Meaningful Visit for Surprise First Joint Appearance of 2026.
The Prince and Princess of Wales stunned hospital staff by crashing their tea break on January 8.
Prince William and Kate Middleton made their first joint appearance of 2026 one day after their kids returned to school and one day before the Princess of Wales turned 44 years old.
On January 8, the Prince of Wales was expected at the Charing Cross Hospital in West London, while his wife’s appearance alongside him was a welcome surprise. As the couple joined a surprise tea party for volunteers to discuss the pressures facing healthcare staff during the winter flu season, stunned staff said, “Wow!” as they entered the room.
“Happy New Year,” William said, before checking his watch and remarking, “Can we still say that?”
The royal couple snapped selfies and were serenaded by a harpist funded by the charity at the visit, as well as joining activities for patients in neurorehabilitation, including an arts room and a therapy gym, according to The Telegraph.
“It was wonderful to see the surprise on the faces of the healthcare staff and volunteers who were honored to speak with the prince and princess—special moments like these give people a genuine boost at a very challenging time,” said Ellie Orton, chief executive of NHS Charities Together.
“We are so grateful to our royal patrons for highlighting the incredible work of the healthcare workforce, particularly over the busy winter period, and the role that NHS charities play in supporting NHS staff, patients, and communities,” Orton continued.
The Prince and Princess of Wales are joint patrons of NHS Charities, a role they took on in December 2020, during the pandemic. This marked the couple’s first joint patronage outside of their own Royal Foundation.
“NHS Charities Together: Driving innovation, transforming care, and supporting staff wellbeing✨,” the couple wrote on their joint Instagram. “A huge thank you to NHS staff and volunteers at Charing Cross Hospital, and across the U.K., whose tireless efforts continue to change lives, every single day. Proud to be joint patrons of @nhscharitiestogether and see how it make[s] a difference to the workforce and patients.”
Speaking about their experiences to the hospital’s staff, William said, “Catherine and I had a very nice tour around the rehabilitation unit upstairs and saw some of the supporting structures and things put together by the NHS and charities to kind of maintain staff welfare.”
“Both of us have had different experiences with hospitals,” he added. “Me working with the air ambulance, Catherine with her recent health journey, and coming here today and reminding ourselves just how important all the teams are, all the staff, the patients.”
He continued, per The Sun, “It’s so heartwarming and it’s so important that we kind of acknowledge and appreciate all that goes on in the NHS, and that very strong bond between patient and carer.”
