The Queen is 'impressed by Kate Middleton' and spends time nurturing the relationship between The Duke and Duchess of Cambridge after 'making mistakes with Charles and Diana', a royal expert has claimed.
Her Majesty, 96, is sees William, 39, and Kate, 40, 'very much as the future' and believes Charles will act as 'interregnum' with the 'burden of monarchy' falling on the Cambridges.
Speaking to OK! magazine, Princess Diana's biographer Andrew Morton said: 'The thing about Kate is the Queen was impressed she adored and loved William for himself, not for his title'.
'She spends a lot more time supporting and nurturing the relationship between William and Catherine than she did with Charles and Diana. It's pretty clear she wasn't going to make that mistake again.
'Everything that happened in [Kate and William's] relationship was quite strategic, quite thought through, after a period of time.
He added: 'In the beginning, nobody in the royal household expected for a second that the university romance with Catherine and William would continue for any time after they graduated, like most college romances which disintegrate under the intense scrutiny of jobs and geography.'
The Queen, who celebrates 70 years on the throne next weekend, hasn't been shy about her admiration of her grandson's wife.
Former BBC's royal correspondent Jennie Bond previously said Her Majesty admires the way the Duchess has become a 'Queen in waiting'
The Queen was also said to be 'practically skipping' with joy on the day of Prince William's wedding to Kate Middleton, according to Mr Morton.
In an extract from his upcoming book The Queen, published by the Daily Mirror, he wrote that the Queen felt the big day in April 2011 was an important milestone for the monarchy following difficult years where her children's marriages failed and Princess Diana was killed in a car crash.
Morton, who famously wrote Diana's authorised biography, said: 'The Queen was positively playful on the day of her grandson's nuptials, 'practically skipping' according to one observer, absolutely thrilled at the way the public had reacted to the royal newlyweds.
The Duchess of Cambridge stole the hearts of the nation wearing an Alexander McQueen wedding dress and received loud cheers from royal fans when she kissed her new husband on the Buckingham Palace balcony.
And nobody was more delighted by the positive reception than the Queen.
