Kate Middleton Says She Loves Washing Dishes While Prince William Dries: ‘We’re a Good Double Act’.
Kate Middleton says one household chore at home with Prince William comes with a simple division of labor: she washes the dishes, and he dries them.
"I love washing up. I really do," the Princess of Wales said during a Sept. 30 visit to West Sussex Minibus in Pulborough. Asked whether William helps, she replied, "He does the drying. We are a good double act."
PEOPLE reported that Kate made the admission while sitting with local residents at a weekly lunch in Pulborough Village Hall. Another guest immediately joked, "Oh good, a volunteer!"
The lunch was part of Kate's visit to West Sussex Minibus, a volunteer-run community transport service that is celebrating its 50th anniversary and helps residents who can struggle to access conventional public transportation.
George, Charlotte and Louis Get Involved Too
Kate said the chore is not limited to the adults. "And we get the children involved," she added, referring to Prince George, 13, Princess Charlotte, 11, and Prince Louis, 8.
InStyle also highlighted the family arrangement in its coverage of the visit, noting that the children join their parents in the routine at home.
William has previously spoken about trying to give their children what he described as a "relatively normal home life." During a 2025 appearance on Eugene Levy's The Reluctant Traveler, he said he and Kate try to work around school timetables and handle pickups and drop-offs when their schedules allow.
Kate Rode With the West Sussex Minibus Service.
Kate joined volunteers on one of the service's minibuses before traveling to the village hall for lunch.
She also helped collect 94-year-old Stella Drewett from her home and assisted her onto the vehicle. Drewett had been told that a celebrity would be coming to meet her but replied beforehand, "I don't know any celebrities."
West Sussex Minibus began in 1976 with a single borrowed vehicle. It now operates 11 minibuses from eight hubs across the county, supported by hundreds of volunteers.
The service helps residents reach shops, social events and other activities when age, mobility or limited public transport might otherwise leave them isolated.
Kate Joined About 50 Residents for Lunch.
Around 50 people gathered at Pulborough Village Hall for the regular community lunch. The Independent reported that guests were served red pepper and sweet potato soup with bread, cheese and crisps.
When local resident Lynda Jones teased Kate about whether a princess ever ate crisps, Kate asked for some of the ready-salted ones. "I do. I love salted," she said before taking one.
Jones told Kate that the gatherings made a significant difference for people who had lost a partner. Kate called the lunch "a lovely way to make friends."
Queen Elizabeth Also Washed Dishes at Balmoral
Kate is not the first senior royal associated with washing up after meals.
The Guardian reported that Queen Elizabeth II regularly helped with the dishes after Prince Philip's informal barbecues at Balmoral. Cherie Blair recalled the Queen stacking finished plates and taking them to the sink herself.
Former royal press secretary Dickie Arbiter also remembered helping dry dishes at Balmoral while the Queen washed beside him.
