Mind your fingers! King and Queen use a sword to cut a slightly wonky slice of cake on visit to the Eden Project.

The King and Queen teamed up to cut into a commemorative cake with a sword as they visited the Eden Project in Cornwall today.

Charles, 77, and Camilla, 78, were welcomed to the popular attraction to mark its 25th anniversary and enjoyed a tour around the environmental project to learn about its innovative work and goals for the future.

At one stage, Charles and Camilla were invited to cut a spectacular commemorative cake with a ceremonial sword to celebrate the milestone.

However, it soon turned into a two-person job, with a hilarious image capturing the royal couple teaming up to cut into the cake with Lord Lieutenant's sword, at a slightly wonky angle.

During their visit to the site in St Austell, the King and Queen viewed a section of the 100-metre new marble run and spoke with gardeners and members of staff to learn about the project's wildflower habitat restoration.

Their Majesties were even given specially crafted 'wooden' marbles to send down the run and later take home with them, with quick-witted Charles making a humorous joke: 'That's one way of losing your marbles'.

The royals, formerly the Duke and Duchess of Cornwall, also joined a celebratory lunch where they met with local volunteers who are involved in the upcoming Big Lunch and Big Help Out weekend running from June 5 to June 8.

They were welcomed by pupils who sang from nearby Luxulyan School and sought to learn more about the Eden Projects world-famous biomes and the centre's role in the community.

The visit comes as today it was announced that Charles had accepted an invitation to be a patron of the Community Security Trust (CST), a charity which monitors antisemitism and provides protection for Jewish communities in the UK.

The development was announced by Conservative peer Lord Finkelstein at the start of the charity's annual fundraising dinner on Monday evening.

Charles did not attend the event himself, although his senior equerry Lt Col Johnny Thompson was present on his behalf, along with Home Secretary Shabana Mahmood and Met Police commissioner Sir Mark Rowley.

The CST said the King's acceptance of its invitation highlighted 'His Majesty's long-standing support for the UK's Jewish community and the wider fight against antisemitism'.

It added that the monarch's 'long-standing commitment to promoting tolerance, inclusion and interfaith understanding aligns closely with CST's mission to protect British Jews'.

Charles previously praised the CST's 'wonderful work' during a visit to Heaton Park synagogue in Manchester in October last year, shortly after two worshippers were stabbed to death in an anti-semitic terror attack.

Buckingham Palace has yet to comment on the King's new appointment, which comes just hours after a Jewish volunteer service in north-west London was targeted in an arson attack in the early hours of Monday.

Today is not the first time the King and Queen have paid visit to the historic Eden Project, with Camilla previously accepting a generous card and gift from the centre ahead of her 72nd birthday in 2019.

Meanwhile, in 2021, the late Queen Elizabeth carried out a rare joint engagement with Camilla and Kate, Princess of Wales, where she used a ceremonial sword to cut a cake.

The three most-senior royal women attended the event in celebration of The Big Lunch, which will formed part of the late Queen's platinum jubilee celebrations in 2022.

In a humorous clip that delighted royal fans around the globe, The Queen was presented with a large cake and was handed a sword by Edward Bolitho, the Lord-Lieutenant of Cornwall, to cut it.

When told by an aide that there was a conventional knife available, the Queen replied: 'I know there is, this is more unusual'.

Camilla, then the Duchess of Cornwall commented: 'That's slicing through' before assisting with the final part of cutting the cake - which was loudly applauded by those at the event.

After handing the ceremonial sword back, the Queen used a knife to cut a second slice of cake and remarked: 'That looks very good.'
