Kate and Melania's fashion face off: LAURA CRAIK reveals outfit clues that show the First Lady is 'determined to be regal'

Kate and Melania's fashion face off: LAURA CRAIK reveals outfit clues that show the First Lady is 'determined to be regal' - while Princess is 'powerfully on trend'.
Even with a small army of stylists, hairdressers and make-up artists at their disposal, it’s surely only human to feel a soupcon of empathy for the Princess of Wales and America’s First Lady, Melania Trump.
Yes, they knew what they were getting into when they married their husbands. But as any married person will attest, you can only really know the truth of something when you’re living it.
Prince William joked to his wife Kate Middleton that President Donald Trump had 'missed their little chats' during their welcome at Windsor Castle.
Trump appeared to tell the Princess of Wales 'you're beautiful' shortly after arriving at the royal residence on Marine One with First Lady Melania on the first full day of his historic second state visit to the UK.
The Trumps exited Marine One shortly after noon, as the president shook hands with the Prince and Princess of Wales. The couple exchanged a few words before making their way across the grass.
The greeting was cordial, according to lip readers who provided details of the conversation to the Daily Mail.
Trump slapped William on the arm, and quipped, 'Hello my friend, how are ya?' and to Kate, he said, 'Hello, beautiful, so beautiful.'
'It's a pleasure to see you,' Melania Trump said to William before turning to Kate and asking her, 'How are you?'
William placed his hand on Kate's back and motioned for the couple to begin walking across the lawn.
William and Trump spoke as they walked across the lawn to the entrance, where King Charles and Queen Camilla were waiting.
The president asked William about his children, George, 12, Charlotte, 10, and Louis, 7.
'They’re well and at school,' William replied. 'The new term started a couple of weeks ago.'
'We're blown away,' Trump added. 'It’s been a while since you chatted with me.'
Prince William turning to Kate quipped, 'He has missed our little chats.'
'We can talk now you’re here on a visit,' William added.
'We have lots to catch up with, and there’s been lots of changes,' Trump replied, according to 'The Lip Reader' Nicola Hickling, speaking to the Daily Mail.
Prince William was also heard introducing Donald Trump to the King by saying 'this is my father,' when the president landed at Windsor.
His wife, Kate, gave Trump a broad smile as they shook hands at Windsor Castle.
Kate to William commented sweetly on 'the way they hold hands,' referring to Donald and Melania.
The first lady wore a black dress and a large plum colored hat while the Queen opted for a blue dress and a blue hat. Princess Kate wore a dark red dress and a red fascinator.
Royal honor guards lined the entrance of the castle and music was played after they arrived.
The four spoke briefly as a stiff breeze whipped through the area as the dignitaries boarded their horse drawn carriages.
A 41-round gun salute was fired from six First World War era guns by The King’s Troop Royal Horse Artillery, marking an unprecedented show of ceremony for the president's second state visit to the United States.
The procession included three carriages. Trump rode with King Charles, Camilla and Melania rode in the second carriage followed by William and Kate in the third carriage.
The military band played the American national anthem and other patriotic tunes as the carriages arrived.
The King and Queen and the Trumps stood briefly under a tent for the official arrival ceremony, due to a light sporadic rain in the area.
Charles let Trump walk ahead of him during the inspection of the guard as he was all smiles during the arrival ceremony.
Later in the afternoon the Trumps will visit St George's Chapel, Windsor, to privately lay a wreath on the Tomb of Queen Elizabeth II and participate in a short tour of the chapel that will feature a choir performance
